Tough Day - #OddiesTitan P-51 Mustang Chevy V8 Kitplane - Program Debrief and Emergency Landing
Переглядів 444 тис.2 роки тому
When the gear collapsed I knew I was in trouble, when I couldn't get it to relock I got nervous, when the engine quit things got serious. Come along on what was supposed to be an easy program helping a new owner with his "proven" P-51 mustang replica. A great example of how you always have to be ready. This video includes some very interesting discussion about how a ground crew adds value, and ...
Emergency Smoke in Cockpit - LongNoseThunder Re-Reflight Ep3 - Turbine P-51 Thunder Mustang Kitplane
Переглядів 149 тис.3 роки тому
Engine trouble, a fuel feed issue, smoke in the cockpit, electrical anomalies and then when the gear wouldn't go down the emergency extension handle came off in my hand. Come along on this cross country adventure in the baddest mustang replica on the market (did I mention the airplane is for sale?). The Wasabi relationship with the LongNose goes back to 2016 but this particular series is about ...
Check Flight - LongNoseThunder - Re-Reflight Ep 2 - Turbine Powered P-51 Thunder Mustang Kitplane
Переглядів 51 тис.3 роки тому
Hot oil, engine rigging, wet starts, and a broken gear door. A functional check flight is always a milestone in a program. This was particularly so because of my history with the airplane and the failed attempt the day before. The big questions surrounded the brakes/reverse thrust balance, and the new oil cooler arrangement. When I arrived at the airport that morning Quentin had already started...
Inspection - LongNoseThunder - Re-Reflight Ep 1 - Turbine Powered P-51 Thunder Mustang Kitplane

It was really great to see the LongNoseThunder again. Getting to visit the home of the Walter engine, Quentin Cook's Turbine Power Technologies in Deland FL, made it even better. This is the first day of the program which at Wasabi consists of aircraft inspection, engine runs, and low-speed taxi. We don't always get to talk about our inspection process but it's a critical part of the program an...
Clip - Maintenance Briefing - Stall Vane - Not a Cirrus - Flt 9 Håkan Modified Lancair
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
The maintenance performed briefing is a critical piece of the preparation for a test flight. While we typically talk to the owners between test flights weeks or months could go by and understanding what on the airplane has changed is important not just for figuring out how to test it but how the risks and envelope will be affected. This was a particularly good one. Full Video: ua-cam.com/video/...

About halfway through flight 9 Elliot realized he was sitting in a pudde of hot hydraulic fluid. The cushions were removed to make the helmet fit, the seat back and pan were removed to make the parachute fit. Not sure if it was a blessing or a curse but this meant when the inner gear door actuators leaked they leaked directly on the pilot. Full Video: ua-cam.com/video/ljhqpY_b9xEI/v-deo.html Th...
Clip - Stall Vane Description - It's not a Cirrus - Flt9 Håkan Modified Lancair Initial Flight Test
Переглядів 6 тис.3 роки тому
This was the debut flight of the Håkan "Stall Vane" a lower drag alternative to the large vortex generators tested on flights 7 and 8. This design feature is most well known on the Cirrus SR22. The concept is fantastic but Elliot was concerned about the implementation. CFD will always generate a pretty picture, the hard part is turning that pretty picture into hardware testing that hardware to ...
What is the Håkan "Stall Vane"? - & First Flapped Landing - Flt 9 - Hakan Modified Lancair Aircraft
Переглядів 30 тис.3 роки тому
What is the "Stall Vane". The first landing with the new custom "fowler" type flaps. And a hydraulic problem. Check out Håkan's "stall vane" a lower drag alternative to the VGs we saw on flights 7 & 8. You may recognize the idea from the SR22 Cirrus (they call it a fuselage vortex generator). On this flight, we evaluate the handling qualities of the "stall vane". Thank you for coming along with...
Clip - Just the stalls (tufts/cockpit/comms) - Flt 8 - Håkan Modified Lancair
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 роки тому
Flt 8 meant a new VG configuration which meant a re-check of the stalls. The airspeed indicator was still not up to the task but good enough for a quality evaluation to go wit the handling qualities evaluation. Flt 8 was all about the effort to balance our new found landing performance against the drag penalties associated, more info in the full video. Full video here: ua-cam.com/video/-5qwJ1_3...
How Fast is it? - Flt 8 of Hakan's Modified Lancair - Vortex Generators Tufts & Speed Check
Переглядів 43 тис.3 роки тому
With the airspeed indicator not slow enough for the new flaps we decided it was time to take a look at the fast side of the envelope. Sure VGs help you fly slow but they don't help you fly fast. We removed all the thanksgiving fixins from flight 7 and set out to get a hack at the cruise speed. Thank you for coming along with us. Ryan found this old video of an SFO after a test flight in Race 33 at Mojave. He recognized the profile from the actual emergency landing that happened a few months later and asked about it during our live chat on youtube. Clip - Post Flt Debrief talking stalls and trailing cone Flt 7 of Håkan's modified Lancair
Переглядів 2,1 тис.3 роки тому
With so much success debriefing flight 7 was more fun than most. The combination of the trailing cone confirming the new static location and a fantastic handling improvement (not to mention a new super-low indicated stall speed) meant for lots of great new data to decompress. Meanwhile, with a few hours of daylight left we needed to get our strategy straight for what we would do on flight 8. Fu...

Question? Who is the gearbox manufacturer? Im looking at an ls set up and am looking at several options (stinger and autopsru being the top two contenders) one set up i saw using SDS engine management systems had a double computer set up. Each one ran 4 cylinders. In the event one failed, the engone would still run on 4.

I would put try puting some jelly beans on a tin plate sitting on the dash. If they start dancing around then there's some resonant vibrations being transmitted through the flight controls, which cound indicate eminent flutter.

Total aerodynamics noob here, and I know this is random, but the mention of “deep stall” got me reading. Is anyone aware of work looking at the use of a reverse pitch prop in a pusher like this for recovery from a deep stall scenario? Is it a plausible approach?

Explain again why you did not declare an Emergency? And why its an issue? You were considering bailing out but you don't think it was an emergency? I get that you attract attention but you simply only reply to those that need the communication and keep working the problem. Btw... that aircraft was built like shit. Or the storage period was done with no preparation for long term storage. Either way this aircraft needs to be treated like a major asset and not nickel and dimed. I mean a header tank that gives you 10 seconds to avoid a flame out without an automatic transfer system.....who built this!

That breaks my heart to watch that accident. i’m a pilot myself with a flight instructor and airline background commanding Boeing 737 and Airbus A 320s and more recently , classrooms and simulator training . It’s always been my wish to retire and build and fly a T51 for myself. First of all I would like to express my appreciation to the professionalism of this test pilot. Secondly, it seems clear that the addition of the LS3 engine severely upsets the weight and balance of the aircraft , being with so much heavier than the original Rotax engine or the Suzuki V6. Regarding the issues surrounding the undercarriage. I hope they get re-addressed by Titan. I wonder what other people think about the feasibility of owning one of these experiment craft after watching this.

I believe the hydraulic pump on this plane is the same type as used on boats to trim the sterndrive. Those pumps pull a lot of amps but they are notoriously reliable. Cheers ... safe flights !

Great job on protecting the good people who live around the airfield. Some excellent and timely decisions that ultimately reduced the incident to a mishap and not a disaster. The lack of redundancy was your undoing, in the end. To me as a non aircraftsman (but 40 years of preparing race cars, latterly to international level.) that to have one single system relying on a "fuse" and not an MCB, to fire the engine seems odd. It, to me at least, indicates a need to look for additional safety in that area.

Superb job of narrating and filming and just taking the time to put this interesting story into video. It sounds like some of the systems within the aircraft would benefit from a degree of redundancy and/or perhaps a redesign/re-think? The ongoing gear box issues would make me question the overall reliability of the unit perhaps? Either way - great job - in calmly articulating the entire episode - quite a contribution - & a huge qudos to Bret for his help & analysis . That man deserves a few Beers at the very least! Glad you're safe and the lovely machine is intact. I'm looking forward to see it flying again. Either by you or the happy owner, or perhaps both! :-) (Edit: -just noticed the video is 2 years old. I notice you wear an oxygen mask but I can't figure out where it is hooked to any oxygen container. I am wondring if it is a small unit that has to be refilled every few hours carried on your person or is there a system on the airplane. Thanks
